Funeral Grants

Help when you need it most – Assistance with funeral expenses for you or your loved ones.

We provide members with peace of mind during times of grief. Grants of up to $10,000 are available to assist with funeral expenses for financial ETU members and their spouse/partner. Honorary members and their partners may apply for grants of up to $4,000.

If you need to make an application or ask a question about this scheme, please contact our Claims Officer on 03 8329 0000 or submit an enquiry below.

This service is free to ETU members and their families.

While we can do our best to live long, happy and healthy lives, at some point there comes a time to say goodbye to our loved ones.

According to MoneySmart, a funeral can cost up to $15,000 in Australia. Our Funeral Grant scheme ensures that the financial pressure is lessened when a loved one passes away.

How to qualify

Access to the Funeral Grant scheme is free for all financial and honorary members of the union (and their spouse/partner).

How it Works

  1. The union considers each ETU Funeral Grant application on the basis of need, then refers it to the Board of Trustees for approval.
  2. The ETU Victorian Branch’s Distress, Hardship, Welfare and Training Trust pays the benefit.
  3. The ETU Funeral Grant will be paid to the next-of-kin, and has no bequeath beneficiary.

Terms and Conditions:

  1. To qualify for the ETU Funeral Grant scheme you need to be a financial member of ETU Victorian Branch at the time of making an application, and also have contributed fees to the Branch for the preceding 12 months.
  2. The ETU Funeral Grant scheme is not available if a member pays their ETU membership dues through payroll deductions.
  3. Only an immediate family member (spouse or dependant) is eligible to apply for an ETU Funeral Grant.
  4. An application for an ETU Funeral Grant must be submitted in writing within three months of the member or spouse’s death (application form below).
  5. Spouse/partner means a person that at the time of the death of the deceased person had a marital or couple relationship with the deceased person. “Marital or couple relationship” means the person was legally married to the deceased or ordinarily lived with the deceased as that person’s husband, wife, spouse or partner on a permanent and bona fide domestic basis. The ETU Funeral Grant scheme is not available upon the death of an ex-spouse or ex-partner.
  6. Estimated savings are based on flat rate, without regard to age-based premiums offered by some insurers.
  7. The ETU Funeral Grant scheme is a discretionary payment that may be made upon application by beneficiaries of the ETU (Victorian Branch) Distress, Hardship, Welfare and Training Fund (the Trust) to ETU (Vic) who will assess the application and make a recommendation to the Trustees of the Trust.
