Course Description

This course will enable learners to clearly understand the role of the Spotter as the safety observer to warn mobile plant operators and crane drivers in the proximity of powerlines and underground assets inclusive of communications, water, sewerage and power. This course is recognised by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) and the Victorian WorkSafe Authority, as meeting the requirements for spotting near overhead and underground assets.

Delivery mode is face-to-face training and includes a knowledge and practical observation assessment.


Course Outcomes

After successfully completing the course, an electronic copy of a Statement of Attainment will be issued by The Centre for U. A Spotters Registration Card which is valid for 3 years will be sent out by EnergySafe Victoria (ESV).

Note: To remain current, as per ESV requirements, after 3 years participants must complete a full Spotters course again, otherwise they will lose their registration to observe as a Spotter.

Eligibility for Free Training

  • Members must be financial (includes suspended up to six (6) months)
  • Must be an ETU member for more than three (3) months.

Please provide a copy of each of the following.

  • Your current First Aid card or Statement of Attainment (issued within the last 3 years), and
  • Your current CPR card or Statement of Attainment (issued with the last 12 months), and

Please also provide:

  • Your plant ticket/qualification for what you will spot on. For example, if you wish to spot on an Elevated Work Platform (Over 11m) you must bring a copy of your valid High Risk Work Licence with class WP.

For items of plant such as an Elevated Work Platform <11 Metres, or a Vehicle Mounted Crane <10 Tonne / Metres or other plant where there is no formal operating competency, evidence of training, competency and or experience must be demonstrated to obtain a Spotter Certificate.

Unique Student Identification (USI) – As of 1st of January 2015, the Australian Government introduced compulsory USI numbers. The USI is a reference number that gives you access to your USI account.  A USI will allow you to see your results from all training providers including all completed units and qualifications. Please ensure that you have obtained your USI and provide it to the training provider. The process takes a couple of minutes, is free and available online at http://www.usi.gov.au.
