Course Description

Drug and Alcohol Awareness

This session is delivered by trainers with lived experience of addiction and is about raising awareness and shifting attitudes around the use of alcohol and drugs, their impacts on health and wellbeing, and the risk they pose to workplaces as well as to your employment. The training will equip you with the tools and understanding to make informed choices around alcohol and drugs and includes strategies to help friends, family members and colleagues who may be struggling with careless or casual use of these substances or with dependence.

Family Violence Awareness

With a focus on building strong, respectful relationships and creating conversation around behaviours and anger management, this session explores violence, coercion and control from both a legal perspective and a relational one.

The training examines respect, of being mindful of the rights of others, of the right to feel safe always, and of the damaging impacts of unreasonable behaviours at work. It also provides strategies on how to approach and support someone experiencing violence, harassment, or victimisation (at work or at home).

Mental Health and Suicide Prevention & Awareness

In this session you will learn to recognise stress reactions – in yourselves and in others – and of links to depression, anxiety and to negative ‘self medicating’ behaviours such as substance use and gambling. You will also explore strategies in practicing positive thinking, and for creating habits to manage stress and uncomfortable feelings.

The training also looks at suicide, of common symptoms and behaviours when carrying these thoughts, the importance of connection and support, and of seeking professional help and advice. It also empowers participants with the skills to identify red flags and risk factors of suicidal thinking and behaviours (in yourselves and in others), as well as providing strategies for starting a conversation and encouraging ‘help seeking’ behaviours with someone who may be struggling.

Conclusion

Each Apprentice Day will end with a 30-minute session to motivate positive and lateral thinking, empowerment, workplace leadership and team-building.
