Course Description

These workshops, delivered by ADA Australia trainers with ‘lived experience’ of addiction (and having walked the long road back to health), will be an eye-opening experience for young people who may be forming their attitudes to drugs and alcohol, who likely have friends who may be experimenting, and who are possibly feeling pressures to ‘join the crowd’.

The two-hour workshops for children of ETU members (aged 13-17 years) will cover topics such as:

  • Alcohol and drug use in Australia
  • Legal and illicit drugs, their prevalence and psychoactive qualities
  • The experience of addiction and recovery
  • The long-term damage these substances do to the heart, brain, and other essential organs
  • The insidious ways they change brain chemistry and set the trap of dependence and addiction
  • Being sure of yourself, practicing resilience
  • Making the best decisions for good health and wellbeing
  • Where and how to access support for assistance services

A key element of this offer to ETU members is a focus on ‘culture’ around drugs and alcohol at home. Which is why we are offering adult AOD awareness training for parents to run concurrently – in a nearby room – with the workshops for young people (so you only need make one trip).

While the adult workshops will ‘mirror’ much of the content of the workshop for children, it will also focus on how you can best protect the health and wellbeing of young people around these substances.

These sessions examine how the attitudes and behaviours of young people to drinking, cigarettes and drug use, is strongly influenced by the attitudes and behaviours of the adults in their lives.

The adult awareness workshops will add:

  • The importance of fostering positive attitudes and modelling around these substances
  • Recognising signs of struggle in your children
  • The dangers of adolescent binge drinking
  • Common illicit (and legal) drugs, their long and short-term effects and dangers
  • Where and how to access support for assistance services

(Parents may also elect to be present in the room for the workshop for young people.)

ADA Australia workshops are about ‘re-programming’ attitudes to drink, cigarettes, pharmaceuticals and other drugs, and about understanding what they are doing to our bodies and to our psychological health.

A copy of the ADA Australia youth handbook, ‘A Stronger You – Understanding Drugs and Alcohol’ will be provided to each workshop participant.
